    • 1,The Nigerian flag was designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a Nigerian student who won a nationwide competition to design a flag for the newly independent country in 1959. Akinkunmi’s design was chosen from over 3,000 entries and was officially adopted on October 1, 1960, when Nigeria gained independence from Britain. The flag features three vertical bands of green, white, and green, with a white star in the center. The green represents Nigeria’s rich vegetation, while the white represents peace. The star stands for hope and unity.
2,Nigeria’s first president was Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, who served from 1963 to 1966. He was elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria after the country gained independence from Britain. Azikiwe, popularly known as “Zik,” was a key figure in Nigeria’s independence movement and was a renowned journalist and politician. He is considered to be one of the founding fathers of modern Nigeria. After his presidency, he went on to serve as Governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria until his death in 1996.
3,The youngest person to become president of Nigeria was Major General Yakubu “Jack” Gowon, who was just 32 years old when he took office in 1966. General Gowon came to power following a military coup d’etat that overthrew the Nigerian First Republic. Born in 1934, Gowon joined the army at a young age and rose through the ranks to become a major general by the time he became head of state. He went on to serve as president until 1975, when he was overthrown in another coup.
